“Discussion with FOM are not going smoothly”: Belgian GP Director gives an insight to a potentially gloomy future of the Spa-Francorchamps race

Spa-Francorchamps Director Vanessa Maes
It has been in the news since the beginning of the current 2022 Formula 1 Championship that the Spa-Francorchamps circuit, which hosts the historic Belgian GP, might not make it to the F1 Calendar for next year as there have been some disputes regarding its contract renewal. Now that half the season is almost over and we are left with only nine races which will come after the month-long summer break is over, the reports about the FIA fixing the roster for next year have disclosed that the French GP will not be there in 2022, and the Belgian Grand Prix might also not return for next year.
While the future of the Belgian GP is currently uncertain, the organisation that is incharge of the race at Spa-Francorchamps circuit has revealed that they are trying all the measures to make sure the audience can enjoy an unforgettable weekend at Spa next year. Their Director Vanessa Maes said that even though they have attempted at talking to the FOM regarding their contract renewal, the conversations have not been as fruitful as she had wanted.
Only last week, retired F1 World Champion Jenson Button gave his take on why the Belgium Grand Prix should be put on next year’s F1 Calendar. While the FIA have said that 2023 will see the largest F1 calendar ever with 24 scheduled races, it is still not known if one of them will be the Belgian GP in Spa-Francorchamps.
Future of the Belgian GP hangs in the balance

The biggest problems that have arisen during the conversations about the renewal of the contract for the Belgian Grand Prix are the monetary issues. The newer circuits which are interested to host a Formula 1 race at their venues, have allured the FIA by digging deep into their pockets and offering a hefty price but that is beyond the budget that the Spa-Francorchamps circuit can afford for now. The Circuit Director Vanessa Maes said, “We are in talks with the promoter of F1, Formula One Management, and those discussions are not going smoothly.”
She also said, “The constant rumours don’t make it any easier. Sometimes I read that we will stay, other times that we should have no illusions and other times that we are in between.” But Maes said she does not want any part in the speculations about the future of the Belgian Grand Prix.
