Does Ferrari and Charles Leclerc have the firepower to cope with a resurgent Max Verstappen and Red Bull?
Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc
Ferrari and Charles Leclerc had the perfect start to the season which saw them build a commanding lead over Max Verstappen and Red Bull. But that lead has been considerably cut down in the last two races which saw a combination of some superb driving by the reigning world champion and stupid decision making by the current championship leader, Charles Leclerc. We all know that this season can go to the wire and every point will be crucial.
But, sadly, Charles Leclerc didn’t understand the assignment and made a school boy error in Imola which saw Red Bull and Max Verstappen back in the mix. That’s exactly what top drivers like Max Verstappen crave for and that’s exactly Charles Leclerc provided him with. After putting in a flawless performance in Ferrari’s backyard and gaining some much needed form, Max Verstappen topped it up a gutsy win in Miami.
Despite having the struggles with the car, Max Verstappen didn’t lose hope over the weekend and fended off a late charge by his arch rival. But that is also down to Red Bull being able to take the risk with the upgrades which Ferrari has just not been able to. The Red Bull was head and shoulders above the F1-75 in a straight which didn’t allow to Charles Leclerc to be able to conjure up a move despite the help of the DRS.
Can Charles Leclerc and Ferrari weather the storm by Max Verstappen and Red Bull and return to the top?
Charles Leclerc was happy to register yet another podium but admitted to be second best during the course of the race and that was vividly evident, too.
He, in his post race interview, said, “It was a very difficult race, physically. We struggled quite a bit with the Medium tyres, especially in the first stint and got overtaken there. And it made our race a bit more difficult from that moment onwards.”
“On the hard we were very competitive and towards the end, I thought I could get Max at one point. But today they had the advantage in terms of pace.”
“Upgrades will be very important throughout the year. And I hope now that we can do a step up but from next race onwards,” as reported by Formula1.
Charles Leclerc is right that Ferrari needs to bring in the upgrades if they want to have a chance at the title, but at the same time Red Bull needs to give Max Verstappen a more reliable car or they will pay the price. This game of chess will continue throughout the season and will make it a spectacle for fans around the world.
