In the current day and age, taking part in motorsports of any form can set you back hundreds of thousands of dollars. Especially when it comes to Formula One, the costs that are connected to the sport are immense. You need to start with karting and get better to further move onto single-seaters in F3 and F4 after which comes Formula 3. Later on, the stepping stone named Formula 2 comes into play and finally comes Formula 1. It looks like an easy ladder to climb but that is not the case.
Suppose you are a driver with the right amount of talent and skills, they will only get you so far. Money is the main element in motorsports. Without it, you won’t be able to progress that far. Drivers end up paying upwards of 2 million dollars for competing in a single season of Formula 2 which is not affordable for everyone. Sponsorship is gravely needed for drivers and to be worthy of it, you need to be skilled so it all comes into one big circle. Many drivers in the current Formula 1 grid did not come from wealthy families.
It will be surprising to many to know that the 2021 Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen was on the list among the drivers who did not come from wealthy families. Max is rich today but that was not the case during his childhood. Verstappen is the son of a former F1 driver Jos Verstappen, and a karting racer Sophie Kumpen. With his parents being so engraved in racing, it is no surprise that the Dutch became a racecar driver himself.
Max Verstappen DID NOT come from a rich family
With his father Jos being an F1 driver, you might think that they would be well off but that wasn’t the case. F1 drivers weren’t paid that handsomely at the time. Whatever wealth that Max Verstappen’s family had acquired, they put it into helping Max with his racing career.
His performances in the junior series attracted many sponsors which further on included Red Bull. Once the Austrian energy drinks company picked him up, the family didn’t want to worry about any further racing expenses.
Max has come a long way since then. The Dutch driver signed a lucrative six-year contract extension with Red Bull, which will pay him around $40 Million per year. This means that he becomes the highest-paid F1 driver alongside Lewis Hamilton. He is living proof that anything is possible as long as you have the skillset and work hard for it.
