Drive to Survive: Christian Horner expects Lewis Hamilton’s retirement to drop Mercedes ‘really in the s**t’
The Red Bull team boss speculates on the future of the Silver Arrows after Lewis Hamilton.
Christian Horner, Lewis Hamilton
Lewis Hamilton has been an integral part of the Mercedes F1 team. The British driver will enter his eleventh season with the Silver Arrows this year. In recent times, questions have arisen about the future of the 38-year-old. The German team presently has no obvious option to replace an outgoing Hamilton. Red Bull Team Principal, Christian Horner asks the same question in ‘Drive to Survive.’
In the fifth season of the famous Netflix docuseries, the 49-year-old can be filmed deliberating over Mercedes’s future dilemma. Christian Horner wondered, “If he did retire? Who on earth would they take?” The Red Bull team, boss, further speculated about the state of the Silver Arrows if Lewis Hamilton decides to leave F1. Christian stated, “That would drop them really in the s*** if he decides to retire.”
Moreover, Horner goes one step further to think about the alternatives Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff would have. The 49-year stated, “What are Toto’s options if Lewis were to retire? It leaves them pretty exposed.” Luckily for the Silver Arrows, Lewis Hamilton has mentioned his desire to continue in Formula 1 as the British driver aims to win his eighth world championship.
“You start to see cracks,” Christian Horner on a frustrated Toto Wolff
During the latest season of ‘Drive to Survive,’ Wolff loses his temper during a meeting between team bosses and F1. Horner mentioned his thoughts on the incident. The 49-year-old said, “He got himself pretty wound up.” The Red Bull team boss understood the frustration of his Mercedes counterpart. He continued, “It’s a horrible feeling to suddenly only be a part of the scenery, and not competing.”
Christian further stated that the sudden lack of Mercedes’s competitivity would take time to sink in the minds of Toto Wolff. The Red Bull Team Principal said, “And that takes an adjustment.” Additionally, Horner believed this to be a major crisis for Lewis Hamilton’s team boss. He concluded, “It can cause self-doubt, and emotions that haven’t been prevalent. You start to see cracks.”
Christian Horner is skeptical about a post-Lewis Hamilton Mercedes. The Silver Arrows have revolved around the 38-year-old recently and achieved immense success together. However, the British driver will inevitably think of a future outside the sport. Subsequently, this could become a massive setback for the German squad in the future.
