Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton are two of the best drivers in the history of Formula 1. Hamilton won multiple world titles with Mercedes in the turbo hybrid era. At the same time, Verstappen is currently dominating the sport at Red Bull. Many have argued over which driver is faster than the other. Former F1 team owner Eddie Jordan believes that the British driver would prove no match for the two-time world champion.
Former F1 driver David Coulthard asked Jordan if Hamilton was too old to go head-to-head with the Dutchman. The Irishman admitted that he sees the 7-time champion as a driver who can still win races but would simply not be able to defeat Verstappen in the same car. The 75-year-old was convinced that the Red Bull driver was at the prime of his career and would come out on top.
Eddie Jordan said in Formula For Success podcast (H&T: Crash.net), “Yes. I think he will still win grands prix but he will need certain things to fall in place with him. Max is at the sweet spot for age, experience, belief, knowledge… and I think in the same car, right at this moment as we speak with the same ages it has to be Max.”
On the other hand, Coulthard insisted that Hamilton still has what it takes to challenge the two-time world champion. The former McLaren driver believed that having both icons on one team would be similar to the iconic Prost-Senna rivalry.

The 7-time world champion is statistically the most successful driver in Formula 1. Hamilton has an incredible record in the sport that has solidified the Briton’s place in the history books. Unfortunately, the 38-year-old had failed to stand on the top step of the podium since the 2021 Brazilian GP when he defeated Max Verstappen to victory with a stellar performance.
Lewis Hamilton has not had enough opportunities to win a race in F1’s new ground-effect era. Mercedes have fallen behind Red Bull by a massive margin as the team is still trying to bridge the enormous pace deficit. George Russell took the Silver Arrows’ only win in the new era coincidentally at last year’s Brazilian GP. Although, the team has taken significant steps this season.
Thus, Eddie Jordan was adamant that Lewis Hamilton would not be able to defeat Max Verstappen in the same machinery. The Irishman insisted that age plays a major role in this aspect, with Hamilton being nowhere near Verstappen’s current prime. Although, David Coulthard believed the two could be an even match if given an equal car.
