Lewis Hamilton‘s arrival at the Ferrari F1 team from 2025 onwards has opened a pandora’s box in the driver market. Mercedes has all of a sudden found itself in need of a driver for next year and while quite a few names have been thrown into the hat, former F1 team owner, Eddie Jordan, has talked up the name of the former 4-time world champion, Sebastian Vettel.
Eddie Jordan firmly believes that Sebastian Vettel will fit in nicely into the Toto Wolff-led Mercedes team. The German has immense experience when it comes to the pinnacle of motor racing and despite having spent two years on the sidelines, is seen by many as an extremely fast driver.
Jordan while talking about the prospect of Mercedes going after Vettel on the Formula for Success podcast, said, as reported by Crash.net:
I think Vettel has to be in the frame because of the major German contact. And we know what happened with Michael before. He left Ferrari, where did he go to? Back to Mercedes. So, that’s a possibility. If it was me, and the way that Formula 1 is progressing, I would look at Vettel. I think it’s a good choice. It makes sense for Mercedes [to have a] German driver in the car.
The 75-year-old with his comments has made it quite clear that the former Aston Martin driver is a good choice for the Brackley-based team. Moreover, in order to back his claim, he has given the example of how Michael Schumacher went to Mercedes after his time with Ferrari.
Mercedes has quite a few other options other than Sebastian Vettel for 2025
While Eddie Jordan has deemed Sebastian Vettel the perfect candidate for Mercedes, the latter is not the only good driver option available in the market. The lights of Alex Albon, Carlos Sainz, Valtteri Bottas, Esteban Ocon, and the former two-time world champion, Fernando Alonso are all believed to be in the running.
Moreover, Alonso being the ultimate opportunist that he is, is being deemed by several people as the one who really has a decent chance to secure the Mercedes seat for 2025. The Spaniard is also very good friends with George Russell.
Keeping in view everything that has been discussed above, the 2024 silly season will be full of twists and turns that will surely keep the fans entertained. Amongst all the possible options, Sebastian Vettel and Fernando Alonso would bring the most experience, in case Toto Wolff decides to go after one of them
