“Everybody will be quite proud of me back home”: Guanyu Zhou assumes after his points finish in Canada GP

For Chinese racer Guanyu Zhou, his debut race with Alfa Romeo in Bahrain was a massive success as he scored points in his first-ever F1 Grand Prix, thus becoming one of the only 27 racers to attain this accomplishment. Ever since then, Zhou’s record had somewhat blemished as he could not score in the succeeding races due to three retirements in Miami, Barcelona, and Baku as well as some near-misses with P11 finishes in some of the races.

After his grand debut in the season-opener Grand Prix in Bahrain, Guanyu Zhou ‘s next points finish came in the ninth round of this year’s F1 2022 Championship, with a solid P8 finish in the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal. After weeks of persistent reliability issues and disappointingly slow pace in the races, Guanyu Zhou is finally back in the points with his teammate Mercedes alum Valtteri Bottas in the seventh place.

After achieving the points finish right at the beginning of this season in Bahrain, Guanyu Zhou has two close-calls with some point finishes in the next two races as he finished them at the eleventh place. But then, his train of disappointing race finishes and DNFs plagued the Alfa Romeo team as the young Chinese could not manage to score any points. But going into the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal, Zhou knew that he had to score points in order to prove that he is worthy of the Alfa Romeo seat beside Valtteri Bottas, who has 46 points to his name as of now.

After achieving the eighth position in the Montreal race, Guanyu Zhou commented, “Yeah, happy to see the chequered flag first of all, as there’s been frustration going on before this weekend. This weekend, a new track, we arrived here with no clue what it’s going to be but I’m just so happy with the performance as a team.”

He also said, “Every grand prix is a special moment, especially here in Montreal. We see a lot of Chinese flags on the grandstand and supporters in worldwide, so I’m just super happy that [I] finally can give them some points and, yeah, very happy, I think everybody will be quite proud of me back home as well.
