Formula 1 has, over the years, seen quite a few unique racing drivers, and one that doesn’t need any introduction is the 2007 F1 World Champion, Kimi Raikkonen. While he is no longer racing in the sport, he has left a big imprint, and recently, while talking about his F1 journey, he has admitted that during his F1 days, he ran motocross races without telling his F1 teams.
Knowing Kimi Raikkonen, this does not come as a huge surprise, as when he was making his trade at the pinnacle of motor racing, he always used to do whatever he wanted. He never really bothered himself with other people’s opinions. Surprisingly, this one peculiar trait is what helped him in amassing a worldwide fanbase.
He is popularly known as the Iceman in the racing world because of his stoic behavior, and while talking about his F1 days, he said, as reported by Formulapassion, “Sometimes I took part in small races for fun. At home, I have a small rink that I use with the kids. I don’t compete at a high level, but I use motocross as part of my training routine, it has always been like this throughout my career.“
“I have no idea what my teams thought about it, simply because we never talked about it.” Raikkonen has made it pretty clear that while he used to do motocross during his time off from F1, it was nothing too big as it was something he used to do as part of his training routine while he was at his home.
Kimi Raikkonen is Ferrari’s last driver to win an F1 World Champion
While Kimi Raikkonen has admitted that he used to do motocross during his F1 tenure, he is, to date, the last Ferrari driver to lift an F1 World Championship. As mentioned earlier, he achieved this feat during the 2007 season of the sport, and since then, it has been a struggle for the Italian team to replicate the achievement.
During the 2007 F1 season, Raikkonen was in stupendous form, and it was because of this that he was able to score 110 points and help Ferrari win the coveted title. The Championship fight was extremely tight between Lewis Hamilton, Fernando Alonso, and the Finnish driver, and the latter could edge out the other two by just 2 points.
Kimi Raikkonen is truly one of a kind racing driver for several reasons. Since leaving Formula 1, he has tried his hands at a few other competitions, including the famous NASCAR racing series. Raikkonen has so far driven in two races in the competition for the Trackhouse Racing team.
