Ex-Renault F1 Team Boss takes credit for Fernando Alonso’s Aston Martin move, claims he is the ‘real surprise’ of 2023
Flavio Briatore has indicated that the shift of Fernando Alonso from Alpine to Aston Martin has been the Spaniard's best decision since returning to F1.
Last year, the F1 world was shaken to the core after Sebastian Vettel announced his surprise retirement from the sport at the end of the 2022 Championship. This led to Fernando Alonso jumping ship from Alpine to Aston Martin with enormous faith in Lawrence Stroll’s vision for the team. Fast forward to 2023, the Spaniard has made all his critics go silent as he has proven why his team choice was perfect. He has attained some great points for AMR, causing them to snatch the second spot in the World Championship–a steep climb from their 7th spot last year.
With four podium wins in the five races that have already happened this year, Fernando Alonso is now settled into the top 3 on the Championship table. Applauding his stellar job in his debut year at Aston Martin, former Renault Boss Flavio Briatore has claimed he pushed the Asturian to make the move to the British team. Alonso was already close to 40 when Alpine gave him a chance to return to F1 after his exit in 2021. Where most racers retire by their 40s, Fernando’s shift from the Enstone outfit at 41 was not being received well by the critics.
But now, everyone who doubted Nando have been silenced. Speaking on this, Briatore said, “Fernando is the real surprise of this World Championship with Aston Martin, a team that wasn’t competitive until last year.”
Flavio Briatore explains why Fernando Alonso’s move to Aston Martin is perfectly timed
Aston Martin is the true definition of an up-and-coming F1 team. While they are not a part of F1’s big three–Mercedes, Ferrari, and Red Bull–they still have enough funds to invest into massive research and development. Taking a note of this, Flavio Briatore said, “They [Aston Martin] are investing heavily in technology and in the factory. For these reasons, I pushed Fernando to join Aston Martin, who are now second after five Grands Prix.“
The last time Fernando Alonso had won a Grand Prix for McLaren was a decade ago. Now, the Spaniard has already scored four podium wins in five races, and fans are eager to see him bag a race win. For this, he will have to display his best performance at the remaining 19 races of this season.
