Liam Lawson got a golden ticket to F1 after Daniel Ricciardo’s injury at Zandvoort. In just his third Grand Prix, Lawson knocked out Max Verstappen in Q2 and took home his first F1 points. However, this impressive run of performances was not enough. During the Japanese Grand Prix, AlphaTauri announced Ricciardo and Yuki Tsunoda as their lineup for 2024. Ex F1 team owner Eddie Jordan, who owned Jordan Grand Prix has recently urged Red Bull to give Lawson more opportunities.
Knowing that AlphaTauri is the team for Red Bull’s rookie drivers, their decision to retain Ricciardo came as quite a surprise. Jordan said that Red Bull should promote Lawson to their F1 team in 2024 or 2025. He believes that Liam Lawson might be another Sebastian Vettel in development.
“I think he either next year or the year after should wind up in Red Bull. Put Lawson in the car. Take that chance, because you have a chance of making another Vettel. It’s really difficult to see how Daniel is going to do that… Don’t lose Lawson though, I think he is really good,” Jordan said in the Formula For Success Podcast.
The exact date of Ricciardo’s return is still unknown. While Lawson will be racing in the Qatar Grand Prix, Daniel Ricciardo can make a comeback in any of the races that follow. Those include the US GP, Mexico GP, and Brazil GP.
Liam Lawson’s plans after missing out on AlphaTauri in 2024
Liam Lawson’s recent exploits in F1 had him as the favorite for AlphaTauri next season. However, the team chose experience over potential as they chose Daniel Ricciardo for the role. Lawson was announced to be returning to his reserve driver role for Red Bull. However, even after missing out on a full-time F1 seat, Lawson still has plenty of opportunities left.

His impressive performances have put him in a very good position with the team. Due to this, Red Bull will now invest more than ever in the Kiwi as he is their brightest future prospect at the moment. His reserve driver role will help him gain a deeper understanding of Formula One and the team itself. From simulators to continuous communication with the engineers, Lawson will be preparing behind the scenes for an F1 comeback.
Also, Red Bull are infamous for their no-nonsense policy. As was seen this season with Nyck de Vries, there is a possibility that they might let go of another one of their drivers mid-season if their performances are not up to the mark. If such a situation arises, Lawson will be Red Bull’s man to go to, giving him his much-desired F1 seat.
