F1 gets all-set to debut new rule at Imola GP, takes away teams’ freedom to choose tires for Qualifying
The Emilia Romagna Grand Prix or the Imola GP will see some new changes to the race weekend rules as well as the tires for the Grand Prix.
Only a couple of weeks ago, at the Miami Grand Prix, Formula One debuted their pre-race show that received enormous backlash from most of the racers. While George Russell protested that it hardly left room for the drivers to concentrate before embarking on a massive 57-lap-long journey, and Lando Norris claimed that F1 should not be allowed to do whatever it wanted with them. In the middle of all the hullabaloo, reports have arisen that claim there will be yet another rule change at the upcoming Emilia Romagna Grand Prix in Imola.
This time, the F1 committee are trying to bring an upheaval in the way the Qualifying Round is held. The new Qualifying format will debut in Ferrari’s home ground and it will seize the teams’ freedom to choose their tire sets. According to the altered regulations which are being called ‘Alternate Tire Allocation’, the teams will have their total number of slick tire compounds decreased to 11 from the usual 13. This will include 3 hard tires, 4 medium tires and 4 soft tires.
During the Qualifying, all the teams are allowed to use only hard tires during Q1. And for the ones that move forward into the second round, they will be able to use only medium tires. And once the teams clear both Q1 and Q2 to move to the third round, they will get to use the soft tires. This rule change is a move towards sustainability, and it has been brought about by Formula One in association with their tire supplying partner Pirelli.
Imola GP will see the debut of yet another novelty apart from the Qualifying changes
Apart from the curious change in the rules for the Qualifying Round, the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix of Imola will also see the debut of the all-new Pirelli extreme rain tires. These tires are extremely special as they will not need the thermal blankets that the mechanics at the pit stations are seen holding every time the racers come in for a tire change.
In other news, whether the Imola Grand Prix will be held amidst the tough weather conditions is the biggest question in F1 town right now. But with the rules changes and the debut of the Pirelli extreme rain tires on the cards, the authorities are ready for the prestigious Emilia Romagna GP. And the fans are also ready to see how Ferrari excel in their home ground and if they can prevent Red Bull from taking away a win from the Scuderia’s backyard.
