Lewis Hamilton‘s shock switch to Scuderia Ferrari for 2025 has led to a busy driver market. Mercedes needs to find an ideal replacement who could fill in the shoes of the seven-time world champion. Multiple drivers are yet to sign a contract for next year including Fernando Alonso. Now F1 pundit Mike Hezemans has reckoned that Alonso might be after Hamilton’s seat.

Fernando Alonso‘s contract with Aston Martin expires at the end of the 2024 season. The Spanish driver previously affirmed that he would like to renew his contract with Team Silverstone. However, Hezemans claimed that a veteran like Alonso would always have an extra plan. The F1 pundit reckoned that the 42-year-old might be looking to race for Mercedes next year.

Alonso always has an extra plan. I think he wants to drive a Mercedes next year.

Mike Hezemans was convinced that Alonso might be trying to play a game with Mercedes to get Lewis Hamilton‘s seat. The two-time world champion has been vague about his future beyond 2024 in F1. Hezemans claimed that this would allow the Silver Arrows to consider Fernando Alonso as a short-term replacement. This could be ideal for Mercedes as it would allow Kimi Antonelli to race for Brackley in 2026 if needed.

He does that because Mercedes thinks: 'if we take Alonso, he wants a multi-year contract'. But Mercedes actually wants to fill up for a year... So I think Alonso is already preparing this and that he will drive Mercedes next year.

Aston Martin praises Fernando Alonso for leading by example

Fernando Alonso joined Aston Martin in 2023 after Sebastian Vettel’s shock retirement. The 42-year-old had a successful first season at the British team with multiple podium finishes. Subsequently, Alonso’s exit could have a massive impact on the Silverstone-based squad. Team Principal Mike Krack applauded the exemplary work ethic of the two-time world champion.

Krack claimed that Fernando Alonso brought a lot more than just his racecraft to the team. The 42-year-old manages to push and motivate the entire crew and lead by setting an example. The Aston Martin team boss reckoned that Alonso had an exemplary work ethic as the two-time world champion worked from morning to late night.

He [Fernando Alonso] brings this extra to the team, driving and pushing and motivating everybody. And leading by example, from the first moment in the morning to late at night, which is exemplary.
Mike Krack said as reported by Motorsport.com

Certainly, Aston Martin would be keen on renewing Alonso’s contract for next year. However, contract discussions between the two parties have not begun. It would be interesting to see how Fernando Alonso decides to manage his talks for his F1 future with the likes of Mercedes and Aston Martin. Fans would be eager to hear where the two-time world champion is headed next season.
