‘911 I WOULD LIKE TO REPORT A MURDER’: F1 Twitter goes bonkers as Lewis Hamilton takes a massive dig at Fernando Alonso’s ‘title worth’ claim

Fernando Alonso has never shied away from giving his opinion, and as such, is not a stranger to controversy. This weekend, he is embroiled in it once again. As you likely know, it involves Lewis Hamilton. The two of them were teammates at McLaren, where they had an infamously icy relationship, and of course, the ‘wounds’ haven’t completely healed, even if the relationship may be more respectful now.
Recently, in a conversation with De Telegraaf, Alonso had said that Max Verstappen’s titles are more valuable than Lewis Hamilton’s: “I think Verstappen’s titles are more valuable than what Hamilton has achieved. I have a lot of respect for Lewis, but it’s different when you only race with your teammate and win 7 titles.”
The reaction to that was what you could expect, quite a bit of mockery and even hate, even if some agreed. The Spaniard later came out to clarify his statement, saying: “And again…please, all the titles are amazing, well deserved and inspiring. Incomparable to each other and let’s enjoy champions and legends of our current time. Tired of the continuous search for headlines. Let’s enjoy them.”
Alonso and Hamilton were also involved in controversy around the Belgian Grand Prix, where after their collision, the Spaniard had gone on a heated rant on the radio, where he exclaimed that Hamilton only knew how to ‘drive and start’ in first, but of course, that was affected by emotions in the moment, and Hamilton had brushed it off. This time, however, things are different.
Lewis Hamilton responds to Fernando Alonso
The implication that Lewis Hamilton’s (and Michael Schumacher’s) titles are worth less than the titles Max Verstappen won because the latter did not compete against his teammate is quite sensational, and it rustled quite a few feathers on social media, where one image, in particular, was reposted, over and over again. It’s from the podium celebration of the 2007 United States Grand Prix at Indianapolis.
Following in the footsteps of his fans, Lewis Hamilton has reposted the same image. And the internet has gone wild. Like then as now, Fernando Alonso does have quite a few supporters, but the Briton has left people ‘cackling’ from this, with most people finding it quite hilarious.
Like it was then, some are just here for the memes, and for the ‘tea’, the ‘beef’, ‘chaos’, or whatever you want to call it.
As for this weekend’s race, Lewis Hamilton will start in third, with George Russell and Max Verstappen ahead of him. The man starting in third place has won the last two Grands Prix, and he will get quite a slipstream down the straight too. The Ferraris on the other hand, are only 5th and 7th, split by Valtteri Bottas. Fernando Alonso will be starting in P9, with Lando Norris ahead of him, in an important weekend for the P4 battle.
