‘[F1’s owners] are pretty keen on him’: Mark Webber brands Logan Sargeant the favourite to join Williams in 2023
Logan Sargeant
Mark Webber has tipped Logan Sargeant to be the next American driver in Formula 1. Sargeant has been linked extensively with Williams, even before Nicholas Latifi was announced as being replaced. It was between him and Nyck de Vries for the seat at Williams, but de Vries has gone to AlphaTauri.
Instead of de Vries a new candidate has emerged: Mick Schumacher. His future at Haas is rather uncertain, and Williams’ team principal Jost Capito revealed that the team have him under consideration for a seat. Logan Sargeant’s own case is also rather complicated, even though the team seem to believe in him.
The main catch is that the American driver needs to finish fifth or above in F2 to gain the required super license points for F1. The gap down from him in third to Enzo Fittipaldi in sixth is just 9 points, and it’s all a bit touch-and-go. With one weekend to go in Abu Dhabi, it is imperative for his future he completely nails it. Mark Webber thinks that Sargeant’s status as an American also provides him a boost.
Logan Sargeant must overcome Superlicense obstacle in Abu Dhabi
Formula 1 has been experiencing a huge boom in popularity in the US, especially since the introduction of the Netflix series ‘Drive to Survive’. You only need to look at the 2023 calendar to validate that: In addition to ‘the’ United States Grand Prix in Austin, there will be two more races in America – One in Miami, which was held this year, and one new street race in Las Vegas.
The addition of an American driver on the grid will only help this boom, and Mark Webber said on Channel 4 that Logan Sargeant is the current favourite for a seat at Williams, as per Motorsport Week: “I think Logan Sargeant. He’s in Formula 2 this year, he might need a bit of introducing to our fans at home.”
Of course, Formula 1 is also now owned by an American company, who Webber says are ‘pretty keen’ on Logan Sargeant: “In general, I think he’s the favourite – American, Liberty [Media, F1’s owner] they are pretty keen on him.” but there is the super license problem: “But there’s some Super Licence challenges around him in terms of points, championship position, in Abu Dhabi.”
Logan Sargeant will drive for Williams in FP1 of the upcoming US GP, among other rookies. A good showing there should help his chances, but of course, if he doesn’t get the super license points, nothing helps at all.
