“When US touch something, it becomes crap” – Fans blast F1 for its ‘cringe’ American-style driver intros at Miami GP
Fans slam Formula 1 over the new American-inspired Miami GP driver introduction.
Max Verstappen, Miami GP
The Miami GP is the first of three American races on the 2023 F1 calendar. It is a crucial part of the sport’s strategy to solidify its position in the United States. Formula 1 has taken huge steps to blend in with the American culture, including shifting the paddock inside the Hard Rock stadium this season. Now, there is another addition to these efforts, the American-style driver introductions.
Right before the GP started, drivers were introduced one by one to the audience as they made their way amidst smoke and iconic American introductions that are common in sporting events in the US. It seemed that the drivers were not ready for what was in store. Max Verstappen and George Russell appeared awkward as they waved to the crowd.
On the other hand, the American F1 driver Logan Sargeant greeted his home fans with Lewis Hamilton too having a smile on his face. Yet, it remains a peculiar way of starting things before a race. F1 might be keen on trying to gain a wide appeal in the United States. However, such a new ceremony just to gain commercial appeal might not be liked by the paddock.

“Never again please” – Fans urge F1 to stop such an entrance in the future
Fans on Twitter were furious after witnessing such a disaster. One user mentioned that whenever the US becomes a major focal point, things only go downhill from there. The user replied, “When US touch something, it becomes crap… Please, stop this kind of things…” While another fan stated that such a ceremony was nothing short of mockery of the pinnacle of motorsport. The fan said, “It was awful. Made a mockery of the sport.”
Moreover, one fan called it as one of the most embarrassing incidents in recent F1 history as the sport did everything to get the US to appeal under Stefano Domenicali‘s leadership. The fan wrote, “No it was hideous. It was awful. It was embarrassing. I’m mortified for all involved. You focus on the us audience but forget the rest of the world.” At the same time, several users demanded F1 stop such a thing in the future. One user stated, “Never again please.”
Thus it seems that fans have had enough of the efforts made by F1 in the US. Fans believe that the sport is trying too hard to persuade American viewers at the expense of its own traditions. Commercial interests are crucial to every sport. However, there is a fine line that Formula 1 must not cross in its ambitions to conquer America.
