“Time to get the Twitch Quartet back together” – Fans demand a virtual Imola GP with current F1 drivers to fund Imola flood relief
Fans propose the idea of a virtual Imola GP to gather funds to donate for flood relief to the victims impacted by the devastating Imola flood.
Returning after a week since the Miami GP, Formula 1 was supposed to have a triple header with back to back races in Imola, Monaco and Spain. Fans were anticipating some great action as the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari in Imola allows for high-speed racing, enabling the racers to overtake their rivals. Lately, due to the increased number of street races with narrow tracks, fans have missed the adrenaline rush from the overtakes that make up a chunk of the reason why F1 is so popular as one of the most dangerous sports in the world. This provided all the more reason for the Formula One followers, and especially the Tifosis, to have their eyes pealed for the Emilia Romagna GP.
Unfortunately, the authorities governing Formula 1 had to cancel the race in Ferrari’s backyard because of grave weather conditions in the Emilia Romagna region. As devastating floods compelled thousands of locals to relocate from their homes, F1 decided it was not conducive to hold a Grand Prix in such a dire situation. But fans were not too happy with the sudden calling off of the Imola GP as it means they have to spend yet another weekend without any races to look forward to.
But some of the creative minds on Twitter have devised the perfect way to keep the F1 community involved in the absence of an in-person Imola GP. Their plan is to demand the authorities to organize a virtual Imola GP where all the twenty drivers would participate with their own simulator setups. Some even suggested fixing ticket prices to the race at $20 and proposed to donate all proceeds from the event to flood relief in Imola. This has brought back memories of the COVID-19 lockdown times when the ‘Twitch Quartet’ of Charles Leclerc, Lando Norris, George Russell and Alex Albon often streamed their races on Twitch for the fans to enjoy in the absence of any Grand Prix.
Fans applaud the plan to bring all racers together for a noble cause
Photos showing the conditions of people stuck in Imola speak for the terrible plight in the wake of the floods. Although the weather has improved now, there are many victims still reeling from the impact of the natural calamity. Some fans have claimed, to help them financially, a virtual Grand Prix with the purpose of donating the proceeds from the broadcast towards flood relief should be arranged. Several Twitter users have backed this demand, and here is what they are saying on social media–
In other news, Imola GP is postponed for now, not cancelled. The Mayor of Imola has said that once the weather improves and situations are conducive enough, they might resume a dialogue with the F1 authorities to bring back the F1 circuit to Imola this year. But as of now, no official confirmation regarding the dates when the Imola GP will return has been given out.
