Oscar Piastri was having a decent weekend at the Belgian GP. The Australian driver made headlines after qualifying on the front row for the F1 Sprint. Piastri even took the lead in the sprint race on Saturday but finished second behind Max Verstappen. Unfortunately, the McLaren driver’s race ended early on Sunday after an incident with Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz.
Piastri started the Belgian GP from P5 just behind Sainz. The Australian driver tried to make a move on the Ferrari into Turn 1. However, the McLaren driver was squeezed by the Spanish driver as Oscar Piastri was left with no space. The rookie made contact with the barriers at the corner and collided with the Ferrari of Carlos Sainz.
This severely hampered the race of the Australian driver as he dropped down the order on the straights. Subsequently, the Woking-based team instructed Piastri to retire the car on track, bringing a disappointing end to what was a great weekend so far. On the other hand, Carlos Sainz too incurred major damage on the right sidepod.

Fans demand FIA penalize Carlos Sainz after the incident with Oscar Piastri
Fans on Twitter quickly shared their views on this collision. Furious fans urged that the Ferrari driver be arrested for such dangerous defending with Piastri on track. One user wrote, “Arrest sainz very dangerous driver.” Another fan was perplexed to see that the FIA had not given Sainz a penalty for this risky endeavor. The fan replied, “HOW IS THAT NOT A PENALTY?”
Moreover, one user hoped that the stewards would hand a penalty to Carlos Sainz, considering yesterday’s penalty on Lewis Hamilton. The user commented, “Hope sainz gets a 5 second penalty… They was quick yesterday to dish them out for sporting incidents….” On the other hand, another fan believed that Oscar Piastri made a wrong move into Turn 1. The fan stated, “What was blud doing divebombing there.”
Thus, Oscar Piastri was forced to retire his MCL60 on the first lap of the Belgian GP. The Australian driver made contact with Carlos Sainz at Turn 1 which inflicted major damage on both cars. However, there will be no investigation into this incident by race control. As such, Sainz will be free to recover his lost ground in the race despite a heavily damaged car.
