Formula 1 is a global sport. F1 races in a host of different countries throughout its hectic calendar. As such, drivers end up having some of the most unexpected coincidences in an F1 season. The same goes for Esteban Ocon and Lance Stroll who will be the only 2 drivers on the grid this year with a special coincidence. The pair will be racing in F1 this year on their respective birthdays.
Every year, it is interesting to know which F1 drivers will get a chance to race in a Grand Prix on their birthdays. For 2023, only 2 of the 20 drivers will get to celebrate their special occasion in the paddock, Esteban Ocon and Lance Stroll. Esteban Ocon will be turning 27 on September 17, the day when the Singapore Grand Prix takes place. While Lance Stroll will turn 25 on October 29, the Sunday of the Mexican Grand Prix.
This may seem like two great coincidences, but it may not be as rare as we might think. F1 has 20 drivers on the grid and a year has 365 days. There have been many occasions in the past when a driver has raced and even won on their birthday in the sport. James Hunt famously won the 1976 Dutch Grand Prix, the same day the F1 legend celebrated his 29th birthday. Although, this seems unlikely for Esteban Ocon or Lance Stroll. Stroll will be partnering up with Esteban Ocon’s old teammate, Fernando Alonso in 2023.

After this information was posted on Reddit, fans were amazed to see such coincidences. An awe-struck user asked the community about the chances of such an occurrence. The user wrote, “Isnt this mathematically insane ? Someone do the odds please.” While another fan shared the math behind getting to share a birthday with an F1 driver. The fan stated, “The chances of sharing your birthday with an active F1 Driver are currently 20/365…So why do I have to share a birthday with Lance Stroll out of all people.”
On the other hand, fans also hoped for Ocon and Lance Stroll to have a fun race on their respective birthdays. One fan stated their optimism in seeing Esteban Ocon win the 2023 Singapore GP in changeable conditions. The fan replied, “I could see a little monsoon rain Ocon Singapore win happening tbh.” While another user made a reference to commentator David Croft who is known for enlightening viewers with a plethora of facts. The user said, “Crofty has entered the chat.”
As it stands, for an F1 driver to have their birthday on race day can be a double-edged sword. Of course, it allows the drivers to make the day even more special. As they bring home a decent result for the team. But a bad day in the office might ruin the birthday completely. However, Formula 1 is all about risks. As such it is certain that both Esteban Ocon and Lance Stroll will be looking to have more reasons to celebrate by the end of the race.
