“Why are you like this?”- Fans react as George Russell cheekily congratulates James Vowles for his new role at Williams
George Russell and James Vowles
George Russell has always been an interesting character on the track and off the track. Both James and George got the chance to work together at Mercedes for the 2022 season and once during the 2021 season during the Sakir Grand Prix. Russell had been a part of the Mercedes junior driver academy for years so it’s evident that the two knew each other for a long time.
Williams F1 had parted ways with Jos Capito, who was acting as their team principal for a couple of years. With the new season dawning upon us, it was uncertain as to who would be chosen as his replacement. As of 13th January 2023, Williams Racing made an announcement stating that Mercedes Strategy Director James Vowles would be joining the Grove-based squad as their new Team Principal.
James Vowels has been a significant part of Mercedes all throughout their turbo hybrid era. Having contributed to the team’s success, the Williams team boss has shocked many during his ongoing career in the pinnacle of motorsport. He worked closely with Toto Wolff and was one of the core members of the team. Mercedes driver George Russell went on to post a silly but wholesome message for him when the news broke.
