Mattia Binotto was all over the news last season, and not for good reasons. The former team principal of Ferrari was criticized throughout the year for his poor strategic decisions. In Netflix’s new Drive to Survive season, there is exclusive footage of the Italian defending his strategy in the Monaco Grand Prix.

There was heavy rainfall at the beginning of the Monaco Grand Prix, and Charles Leclerc started from the pole position. This would have ideally led him to win the Grand Prix, but sadly, that was not the case. On lap 21, his teammate Carlos Sainz was asked to pit and change his tires. Ferrari wanted to double stack and called Leclerc to box when he comfortably led the race. The team then changed their mind and yelled into the radio, “stay out, stay out”.

It was too late by then, as the race leader Charles Leclerc had already entered the pit lane. Ferrari botched Leclerc’s pitstop with a delay in changing the tires. Having a bad day, it was only fair for Leclerc to scream, “what are you doing” at the team. The Tifosi were disturbed by these events.

To make things worse, Mattia Binotto was seen arguing in a clip. He defended the team’s strategy in Silverstone as well. This did not sit well with Formula One fan. Though the team made mistakes, some of the fans reacted to the clip of Binotto quite harshly, “Gonna WHACK Binotto upside the head,” “ the more I know, the more I’m glad I WAS GLAD TO SEE HIM GO”, “This man was so delusional ffs”.

Binotto has been replaced by Frederic Vasseur as the team principal of Ferrari. The team and the fans were not fond of the decisions made by the Italians. This led them to rejoice once Binotto announced he would be stepping down from his role. Though it might seem harsh, Formula One is all about winning, if the team is capable and certain individuals are a hindrance, they will have to go.

Regarding sports, the fans are heightened with emotion and focus only on their favorite teams’ performance. Tifosi has had difficulty being a Ferrari fan, as things did not go well for them last season. They had a championship-winning car and failed to make the best use of it. Now the eyes will shift to Vasseur for the 2023 season.
