Mohammad Ben Sulayem is the President of the FIA. Ben Sulayem is responsible for overseeing the actions of this sports governing body. Although, Mohammad’s tenure has been riddled with controversies. On the other hand, the Emirati has worked for the promotion of motorsports for decades. He also played a major role in the inception of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. However, recently an embarrassing incident came to light.

A video surfaced on Twitter, from the time when Mohammed Ben Sulayem got a chance to drive an F1 car. The video showcases Ben Sulayem donning the overalls of the 2008 Renault F1 team. Consequently, the 61-year-old was in the cockpit of the Renault R28, the French team’s car for the 2008 F1 season. The clip is shot incredibly well, providing the viewers with a dramatic perspective. Although, things do not go as per plan.

Mohammed Ben Sulayem lines up his R28 alongside a Ford GT. The pair are put head-to-head for a drag race. One would root for the F1 car to win this event due to its advantage over the Ford. However, disaster struck, as Ben Sulayem lost control of his machine and crashed into the wall. The Emirati suffered an expensive crash that too while driving it in a straight line, making it a major embarrassment. Thankfully, he was okay and did not suffer any injuries.

Certainly, this incident is one that Mohammed Ben Sulayem would like to forget. However, fans did not shy away from expressing their views. One user made a pun on the name of the FIA President. The user wrote, “It’s Mr. Bean Sulayem.” A reference to the renowned comedic character Mr. Bean. While another fan said, “Mans put the car in the wall on the strait. That’s some Latifi behavior..” A nod to the former Williams F1 driver, Nicholas Latifi.

On the other hand, one fan could not believe Mohammed Ben Sulayem managed to crash the car in such a way. The fan replied, “You have got to be joking? Lol, no way!” Similarly, another user expressed this instance to be an accurate representation of Ben Sulayem’s tenure as the President of the FIA. The user commented, “This sums up the gentleman’s skill and acumen as @FIA president.”

Thus, it seems that fans are not so sympathetic towards Mohammed Ben Sulayem’s crash. Though, this can be credited to the recent controversies regarding the FIA’s actions. Along with the rising tensions between the FIA and Formula 1. Of course, this crash may have happened over a decade ago but Ben Sulayem would probably never forget it. As driving an F1 car is one thing, but crashing it in such a manner is a whole different story.
