Jos Verstappen is a former F1 driver more popularly known for being the father of two-time champion Max Verstappen. The Dutchman had a mediocre career at the pinnacle of motorsport. Yet, Jos has remained in the headlines due to his behavior outside the track over the years. The 51-year-old is now set to partake in the F1 Legends parade at the Red Bull Ring.

The parade will take place at the Austrian GP weekend. Jos will be driving the iconic McLaren M8F, which took part in the 1971 Can-Am sports car championship that won the series that year with Peter Revson behind the wheel. Verstappen is one of six drivers that will hit the track on July 2, including David Coulthard, Juan Pablo Montoya, and even Dr. Helmut Marko.

In Formula 1, Jos made 106 race starts between 1994 and 2003. The Dutchman managed only two podium finishes during this period, with mere 17 points to his name. However, Verstappen did get the opportunity to have Michael Schumacher as his teammate at Benetton during his debut season. The 51-year-old spent most of his career in underwhelming machinery at teams like Minardi and Arrows.

Fans on Twitter lashed out at this announcement. One user made a clear point that the senior Verstappen simply doesn’t deserve to be called a legend of the sport. The user said, “Jos Verstappen’s only accomplishment in Formula 1 is proving just how little the FIA and Formula 1 care about abuse, misogyny, and racism. Our sport is full of heroes and legends. Suggesting Jos Verstappen is one of them is so offensive to them.”

Similarly, another fan wondered how the Dutchman could be considered a legend with an unsuccessful F1 career. The fan replied, “How is Jos Verstappen a legend?” Moreover, users mocked the selection of Jos for this parade. One fan said, “So a racist and a guy without a win take part in a legends lap, makes sense.” While another user wrote, “Such an interesting use of the word ‘egend’.”

Thus, it is clear that fans are furious over Jos Verstappen’s role in the F1 Legends parade. The parade is focused on some iconic machinery being driven at the Red Bull Ring. However, a driver who has never even won a race in the sport might not be the ideal choice for a place in the line-up.
