The Spanish Grand Prix has been a stable part of the Formula 1 calendar. Previously, the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya also used to host pre-season testing. Unfortunately, the racing at the track remained below expectations. Consequently, fans grew to dislike the Spanish GP. However, things are about to change as F1 has finally listened to fans in altering the track layout.

The track’s previous layout included a final chicane before the run-up to the main straight. This prevented the car behind to keep following its rivals before the DRS zone. Subsequently, many had called for removing this chicane into a simple two-corner layout. And now, the sport and the Spanish GP organizers have decided to modify the track to allow for more exciting racing.

Many accused the chicane of hampering racing on the circuit

The Spanish GP track now stands at a length of 4.657 kilometers, 18 meters shorter than the previous track. The run-off area in Turn-1 of the circuit will also be widened with an addition of 70 meters of gravel. Additionally, the modernization of hospitality and corporate areas will also take place before the Grand Prix this season. Local heroes, Fernando Alonso and Carlos Sainz, would be glad to see these modifications.

On the other hand, one fan mentioned their concerns over safety with this new high-speed configuration. The fan wrote, “I can already see the Red Flag. This will produce wild speed when they’re on the 2 Lap before turn 1. It’s dangerous.” At the same time, one user praised FIA President, Mohammed Ben Sulayem for this change. The fan stated, “This is why Mohammed Ben Sulayem is the Greatest FIA President of All Time.”
