Felipe Massa has been digging up bones this year as he is looking to claim the 2008 title from Lewis Hamilton following his appeal to cancel the 2008 Singapore GP’s results, which would put him on the top for that season. In an interview with Motorsport.com, Massa claimed that Fernando Alonso had knowledge of the Crashgate controversy but refused to speak about it.

The Crashgate controversy involved Nelsinho Piquet Jr., who deliberately crashed his car to give his teammate Alonso the advantage. Massa said that during his stint with Ferrari, when Alonso was his teammate, he talked about the incident with him on several occasions. But Alonso always stated that he was not at fault and changed the subject.

“I never had a clear conversation [with Alonso], when a person accepts and speaks is when that person is clear about things. When the person does not want to speak in the right way, we know that maybe he knew everything. I’m sure he knew,” Massa told Motorsport.com

The FIA had deemed Alonso innocent in 2009 after their investigation of the incident. Massa has also revealed that he does not share a good relationship with Nelsinho Piquet Jr., saying that he does not have anything to talk about with him.

Lewis Hamilton’s 2008 title is in danger as Felipe Massa is looking to claim his first championship title six years after retirement. Massa has assembled a very large legal team to help him with his legal venture, as he claims he is doing so for the sport and wants to show that manipulation is not a part of F1. He says that the Singapore incident was clear-cut, but still, no action was taken.

Massa said that former F1 CEO Bernie Ecclestone, and former Race Director Charlie Whiting revealed that they knew about the incident but did not do anything so as to not ‘harm’ the sport. Massa takes this move as unacceptable and has resolved not to stop until the ‘integrity’ of the sport is preserved.

“I do it for justice for the sport. So anyone who tries to write that it is for money is completely wrong. In fact, for example, now I am spending a lot of money on the case… And it’s important that people understand that the drivers’ championship result that year was rigged because of that race,” said Massa.
