The Formula One world was thrown into a frenzy when rumors began to surface that Fernando Alonso and music starlet Taylor Swift were dating. The rumor began when the pop singer terminated her long relationship with Joe Alwyn in March of this year, followed by an anonymous Instagram post implying that the two-time World Champion and the popstar were an item.

Despite the internet hoopla, Fernando Alonso said he was “focused on Baku and racing” this weekend. On TikTok, he responded to the allegations with a mocking video with Swift’s song ‘Karma’ playing in the background. Fernando Alonso was spotted scrolling through his phone before looking up and winking at the camera as if dismissing the claims. Alonso has repeatedly referred to himself as the ‘Anti Hero’ of Formula One, and he discussed this in the F1 documentary series Drive to Survive. F1 fans have connected this to rumors of Swift’s blockbuster “Anti-Hero.”

On arriving in Baku ahead of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, the media quickly asked Fernando about the rumors. When the title lyric from Swift’s hit ‘I Knew You Were Trouble’ was quoted at him in the media pen, Alonso laughed before being asked about the upcoming Formula 1 action. “Yeah, probably,” Alonso responded with a smile when asked about the increased level of attention on him throughout the world as a result of the rumors. “But I’m just focused on Baku and racing.”

The Spaniard has been in top form this year, scoring a hattrick of podiums in all three races this season with Aston Martin. When asked if their car was going to suit the Baku City Circuit, Alonso responded saying, “Let’s see, we’ve brought our low downforce wing into this race, we knew we were on the high side in the last 2 or 3 events, so we were gaining on the corners and losing on the straights, so it was not a draggy car.”

The attention on Alonso wasn’t just from the rumors but also from the new ‘Sprint Shootout’ format that was being put in place this Saturday. The change in format saw the drivers having to jump straight into the car for a shortened version of the Q1/Q2/Q3 qualifying format to set the grid for the sprint on Saturday morning. Standard qualifying took place on Friday, setting the grid for the full race on Sunday.

Alonso revealed that he had tried to have a trial run of what the new weekend structure would look like, and he and Aston Martin would adjust accordingly. “We only had FP1 before quali [in the old sprint format], so in a way, we are used to that kind of pressure in FP1, but Saturday is the biggest difference for us at the moment,” he explained. When asked about his podium chances this weekend, Alonso replied, “Yeah, I’m optimistic.”

“I went to the simulator last week and tried to replicate what the weekend was and tried to see the challenges, and we will try to pay more attention. And on Saturday, as I said, it’s a new thing for everyone, but we will try to do our job.” As the weekend progresses, Alonso will be hoping to put the rumors aside and focus on the job at hand and continue to deliver an impressive showing.
