The F1 driver market has become busy ever since Lewis Hamilton announced a shock move to Ferrari for 2025. The seven-time world champion’s departure from Mercedes has left the Silver Arrows looking for a replacement. Fernando Alonso could be an ideal candidate to fill in the shoes of Hamilton. Now, the Spaniard has revealed his plans for negotiating contracts this season.
Alonso’s current contract with Aston Martin expires at the end of this season. This makes the 42-year-old the only available F1 champion on the driver market on the current grid. Fernando Alonso admitted that Lewis Hamilton’s Ferrari move brought the silly season much earlier than expected. The two-time world champion reckoned that Hamilton and Maranello ended up announcing earlier than originally planned.
I was hoping there would be some action in the Silly Season in the summer, but it started very early with Lewis, they probably had to announce it sooner than expected.Fernando Alonso said as reported by Soymotor
The Aston Martin driver reckoned that things had become interesting for him in the driver market. Alonso highlighted that he was in a good negotiating position on the grid for the future. However, the 42-year-old made it clear that he would not be interested in discussing contracts at least for the early part of the 2024 season.
In my case, it's very interesting, I'm in a good position to negotiate, but at least I want to do the first few races without thinking too much.
Can Fernando Alonso replace Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes in 2025?
Fernando Alonso has played a significant role at Aston Martin since joining the team last season. The 42-year-old is keen on continuing his F1 career, perhaps as long as the age of 50. However, the Spanish driver is yet to extend his contract with the Silverstone-based team beyond 2024.
Critics have claimed that Alonso could use Lewis Hamilton’s exit as a bargaining chip with Lawrence Stroll to demand more money from Aston Martin. However, Fernando Alonso could be interested in moving to Brackley if it allows him to fight for the world title in the short term. Although, there have been no official talks between the two parties so far.
Fernando Alonso is the most experienced driver in Formula 1. The two-time world champion remains clever when it comes to negotiations. Moreover, Alonso’s manager Flavio Briatore met Toto Wolff recently. As such, it remains to be seen where the Spaniard is headed for next year.
