Fernando Alonso joined Aston Martin in 2023. The Spanish driver made a bold call to join the Silverstone-based squad despite the team’s struggles in the past two seasons. However, the two-time world champion had a great start to the season with multiple podium finishes. Although, the British team fell behind its rivals mid-way through the year. Now, Alonso has mentioned that the team will be going through a tough development cycle in the coming years.
The 42-year-old mentioned that Aston Martin had a better starting point than he anticipated. Although, the Spaniard understood that the team would face a bigger challenge in the coming seasons. Fernando Alonso affirmed that the team had passed the first step in terms of development. With the Silverstone-based team becoming a regular in the top 10.
The starting point is a little bit better than what I thought. But now the real difficulty starts.Fernando Alonso said as reported by Motorsport.com
However, Fernando Alonso insisted that Aston Martin would face a challenge in the next two or three seasons. The British squad would need to innovate on its own to extract the most pace out of the car. This could be difficult for the Silverstone-based team that allegedly has relied on ideas from Red Bull’s machinery this season. Although, the team has consistently denied such claims.
Now comes the tricky period for Aston Martin. I think the next two or three years – to find that extra bit, to create something that no one has in that moment, to be creative, to be innovative, I think that's maybe the biggest question mark that we need to face, and I think no one has the answer.
Aston Martin need to bounce back in 2024
Aston Martin surprised the F1 paddock with its performances at the start of 2023. Fernando Alonso seemed to be driving the second-fastest car on track after the dominant Red Bull RB-19. The two-time world champion missed out on a potential race win at the Monaco GP. However, the Silverstone-based team fell behind the competition over the course of the season.
The British team couldn’t keep up in the development race with rivals such as McLaren and Mercedes. Alonso and Lance Stroll struggled to score points in the latter half of the season. However, Aston Martin has continued to emphasize car development with its new wind tunnel finally getting up and running this year.
Fernando Alonso and Aston Martin would be looking to improve next season after an underwhelming end to 2023. However, it seems that the Silverstone-based team might find it challenging to match its rivals. Certainly, it would be interesting to see how things pan out for the British team in 2024.
