Aston Martin ended their bittersweet 2023 campaign in 5th place in the standings, though they managed eight podiums across the year. An early shock spike in form as compared to 2022 saw the Silverstone-based team achieve unprecedented success, nearly winning the Monaco Grand Prix as well.
However, Aston Martin had a major, disappointing drop-off in the second half of the season, despite two podiums by Fernando Alonso, dropping from 3rd to 5th in the championship in a matter of a few races. Team leader Alonso pointed out that straight-line speed has been a handicap for Aston Martin, and should be rectified before the upcoming 2024 season.
Also, if we can improve the straight-line speed - I think that was, in performance numbers, our weak point. Always a little bit too slow on the straights.Fernando Alonso said, as reported by motorsport.com
Alonso earned his fourth place in the Drivers’ Standings as well, driving impeccably to all eight Aston Martin top-three finishes. The Spaniard will be looking to achieve his long-awaited milestone of 33 wins in Formula One, with a stronger car in 2024.
Fernando Alonso disappointed with Aston Martin for 2023 season finish
Despite a strong start to 2023, Aston Martin failed to make much of it by the end, with a huge downturn in performance, lacking upgrades compared to the rest. Aston Martin was unable to win a single race as well, even though they had multiple P2 finishes.
Fernando Alonso admitted he is disappointed by the fifth-place finish in the standings, after believing they could have done better at the start of the year. However, the Asturian understood that F1 can be ruthless in that aspect, but claimed it still “hurt a little bit”.
This is Formula 1 . This is not a charity event. We have to deal with the pressure. We have to deliver. When you finish fifth in the constructors it hurts a little bit because I thought we were better than that.Fernando Alonso said, as reported by thejudge13
Fernando Alonso has a contract with the team for 2024, extending his long-standing record as longest career in F1 history, along with most starts and most finishes. The 42-year-old is also the oldest driver on the grid, ahead of the 38-year-old Lewis Hamilton.
