Fernando Alonso has been putting his enormous knowledge to work for his team, Aston Martin, to assist them in reaching their goals for the 2023 Formula One season. During the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, though, the Spaniard’s decision to offer a brake balance tweak to his crew raised some eyebrows. His teammate, Lance Stroll, got off track, which drew condemnation from fans, and even former driver and analyst Anthony Davidson laughed about it. Despite this, Davidson feels Alonso does not perceive Stroll as a threat and is mentoring him.

During the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso suggested a brake balance to Lance Stroll, which caused him to go off track. Some fans criticized Alonso’s move, but Davidson believes that Alonso’s experience outweighs any possible misstep. As Davidson put it: “He’s more experienced, not just in terms of age, than anyone out there. He’s more experienced in terms of what he’s done in other forms of motorsport.”

Davidson also pointed out that Alonso’s objective is to nurture Stroll to lead the team eventually. According to Davidson: “It obviously means he doesn’t see Lance as a threat, so if you don’t see him as a threat, like you clearly don’t with your other two teammates because they’re sharing the same car as you in a sports car and you want the whole thing to carry on going with that same momentum, well let’s help them out here.”

Aston Martin’s recent success in the 2022 Formula 1 season has stunned the paddock and the fans. The team, seventh in the standings last year, has made a massive leap forward and is now a front-runner, standing second ahead of the likes of Mercedes and Ferrari. The move to sign Fernando Alonso for the team met with criticism, with fans suggesting it would only result in a downward spiral. However, the team’s recent success, with three podium finishes in the first four races, has silenced the criticism.

Alonso’s goal now is to nurture Stroll so that he can eventually lead the team. “I know that I will be in the sport for a few more years but not many, and he will lead the team for the next 10 or 15 years, so I hope I can help Lance in the next few years,” Alonso said.

Alonso revealed that he and Stroll work together closely, sharing any new information about the car to help the team improve. He stated that “if we find something in the car that hasn’t been discussed in the strategy meeting, then we pass it on straight away.” Alonso believes that their ability to share information has strengthened the team. It has contributed to their success in achieving second place in the Constructors’ World Championship.
