Two-time world champion Fernando Alonso was awarded a 20-second penalty after the Australian GP. The Spaniard was penalized due to alleged brake checking, which saw George Russell hit the barriers during his exit from turn 6 during the race at Albert Park.
Following the penalty, during the press conference during the media day in Melbourne Fernando Alonso was asked about his thoughts on the penalty and if he will consider changing his racing style. The two-time world champion was clear about the fact that the penalty was surprising and definitely a one-off, therefore he will not change his racing approach in the future.
It was a little bit surprising, the penalty in Melbourne... But I think it will not change much on how we drive and how we approach racing.Fernando Alonso told Motorsport.com
The Aston Martin driver added that such an incident wouldn’t be checked on a track like Abu Dhabi. As the Yas Marina Circuit had plenty of run-off area. The two-time world champion took a firm stance on the incident despite George Russell praising the FIA for penalizing Alonso.
Fernando Alonso speaks about ‘unsafe’ turn 6 in Australia
The two-time world champion further mentioned how he thinks that turn 6 at Albert Park was unsafe and dangerous. Fernando Alonso spoke about how a relatively small incident between him and George Russell turned into a big crash.

The two-time World Champion cited how there have been multiple incidents on that corner. With Williams driver Alex Albon‘s consecutive crashes being one of his biggest talking points. Alonso seemed to feel that the corner promotes a lot of such incidents as it is pretty tricky for the drivers to maneuver.
I think that the big thing is Turn 6 in Australia. It is not the safest corner at the moment on that track. Also in F2, I think Dennis [Hauger] crashed there as well.Fernando Alonso stated
Fernando Alonso urged the FIA to make some changes making changes to Turn 6 at the circuit before next year’s race. The two-time world championed wants the track to be more safer which could prevent such an incident in the future. Alonso will undoubtedly continue to push himself to the limit at the Japanese GP. Only time will tell if the corner will be modified before next year’s supposed season opener there.
