The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix is the season finale of the 2023 season, and as part of the event, is host to multiple car auctions worth millions of dollars. One of the cars being put up by Bonhams is a McLaren Elva, currently belonging to Fernando Alonso.

The Elva is a 1 of 149 built, boasts an impressive 815 bhp four-litre V8 biturbo engine, and weighs 1,148 kilograms. The hypercar’s top speed caps out at 327 km/h, reaching that speed through a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission for gear shifts. The McLaren Elva is a rear-wheel drive and has a 0-100 km/h time of just 2.7 seconds.

Alonso bought the McLaren hypercar four years after he left their F1 team in 2022, while he was driving for Alpine. Alonso’s second stint in McLaren was followed by a brief retirement, from which he returned with Alpine, whom Alonso had also driven for previously, while they were named Renault.

Further, the 2x World champion is looking to sell the hypercar for a price tag of $3 million, which is nearly double its sale price of 1.7 million. Alonso has sold another exotic car from his collection this year, the Ferrari Enzo, which he sold in June of 2023 for $5.4 million.

Fernando Alonso accused of “splitting Ferrari” by former teammate Felipe Massa

Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa were teammates at the Scuderia Ferrari for four years, from 2010 to 2013. Felipe Massa never matched up to the pace of Fernando Alonso throughout their stint as teammates, and there was always a huge gap between the two in the points standings.

In 2010 and 2012, Alonso narrowly missed winning the championship to Sebastian Vettel. Massa, his teammate, had to sacrifice races to support Alonso, who allegedly used his influence for personal gain. This caused a division in the team, with Massa accusing Alonso of abusing his power.

He has a lot of power and he was trying to get the power he had to do everything on his side. And I think that was splitting the team in the middle.
Felipe Massa said on Track Limits podcast

Throughout his career, Alonso faced team issues affecting team performance. Subsequently, a notable instance was the 2007 McLaren season with Lewis Hamilton, resulting in both losing the championship by a point. Meanwhile, tensions with Massa and Alpine teammate Esteban Ocon also occurred, although Alonso left the French team on good terms, citing a ‘respectful dynamic’.
