Aston Martin had a turbulent Grand Prix in the United States with multiple things going astray for the team. The team realized that they had made a huge misstep in the AMR23’s set-up on Saturday and decided to bring both cars back into the garage from the Parc Ferme. This meant that both the drivers for the team, Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso, had to start the Grand Prix from the pit lane.
Alonso’s car had to be retired from the race with only 7 laps remaining as he was losing ground to the other cars. The team principal at Aston Martin, Mike Krack commented on Alonso’s unfortunate DNF and the reason behind it. Krack revealed that Alonso’s car was battered and bruised due to the demanding nature of the Austin Circuit and pointed towards the ‘floor’ of the car being the reason behind the Spaniard’s DNF. Krack further revealed the car’s condition post-race [as reported by PitDebrief].
It’s very, very tough and there was one part of the floor…on the right that has just broken off half a meter in length.
Krack pointed to how the team didn’t do ‘their homework’ on Friday, which put them at a disadvantage in the following two days. The team boss, however, would be delighted to see Stroll’s performance on the weekend. Lance Stroll displayed great pace after a string of disappointing results and finished P9 on track. Stroll was later bumped to P7 following Lewis Hamilton’s and Charles Leclerc’s disqualification from the race.
