Fernando Alonso’s ‘over-the-top’ comments and help to Lance Stroll deemed a facade

Fernando Alonso has been extraordinarily 'friendly' with Aston Martin teammate Lance Stroll. As of yet. Peter Windsor, though, thinks this may not last.

Fernando Alonso has had his fair share of issues with his teammates. First, there was Lewis Hamilton, with whom he battled for a title during their time as McLaren teammates in 2007. Even now, there seems to be some needle between them from that time. Then there’s Felipe Massa, and most recently, Esteban Ocon. So, people were surprised to find the Spaniard behaving very nicely, even ‘big brothering’ his Aston Martin teammate, Lance Stroll.

There have been many guesses as to why Alonso is doing this. The first one, of course, is he that wants to help AM progress, so he can have a title-contending car soon. The second is that he has genuinely taken a liking to Stroll. The third, the most colorful, and according to many, the most plausible, is that he wants to ingratiate himself with the Aston Martin management – particularly, Lawrence Stroll, who is his teammate’s father – and owner of the team.

Peter Windsor, a very respected journalist, as well as former team manager of Williams and Ferrari, seems to agree with the third viewpoint. During a recent stream, he said: “I think [Alonso’s] as good as anybody in race day. I don’t think he’s as great a qualifier as four or five other guys out there at the moment but very, very good on race day.”

The Briton continued: “A very difficult driver politically to run in the team and you can see that already at Aston Martin, the way he’s over the top [with] comments about how good Lance is and helping Lance – none of which the true Alonso would really be interested in at all.” As mentioned before, these comments surprised many people – it’s a side of Alonso that hasn’t been seen so much before.

Peter Windsor predicts things to come ‘crashing down’ for Fernando Alonso

Many times before, too, Fernando Alonso has also fallen out with his teammates, and team management in general. Perhaps this is his attempt of ensuring a longer stay, or lasting stay. But Peter Windsor does not think it will last. He said: “You can see he’s just trying to build up a whole sort of ‘we love Fernando’ thing at Aston Martin and one day it’ll all come crashing down probably, knowing poor old Fernando.”

He added: “We’ll see how that goes [but] maybe it’ll work? Maybe the Stroll/Alonso tie-up is the strongest bond ever in the history of humanity…” The chances of that being the case are low…but not zero. It is possible that Lance Stroll and Alonso will be able to work together well, and that the Spaniard will groom his teammate so he can lead Aston Martin in the future.

Of course, going by past history, it’s more likely that their relationship will breakdown. But it’s not a guarantee, of course. Alonso has continually expressed his desire to help Aston Martin on the journey to the top, so perhaps this is part of it. As we get deeper into the season, and perhaps when these two come to blows, we will find out how this will truly pan out.
