In the 2023 F1 season, Aston Martin emerged as a potent force, ranking second only to Red Bull in speed. Led by Fernando Alonso, they claimed five podium finishes in the opening six rounds, a remarkable surge from last season’s P7 finish in the Constructors’ standings. However, Lance Stroll has failed to keep up with his two-time world-champion teammate Alonso.

In an interview with BBC Sport, Fernando Alonso expressed his clear understanding of his role within the team. He emphasized his commitment to aiding the team’s progress in various aspects and supporting his teammate, Lance, in any way he could. Alonso acknowledged that his racing career would not last much longer, while Lance would continue racing for many more years and become Aston Martin‘s future leader.

“I know what my role is. Try to help the team to grow in all these areas, try to help Lance as well in anything that I can bring to the team. “Because I will race for a few more years.” And he [Lance Stroll] will race for many more years, and he has to lead the team into the future. So I am happy to help,” Alonso told BBC Sport.

Despite an impressive start, the tides seem turning for Aston Martin in the F1 2023 development battle. McLaren has swiftly taken the lead among the chasing teams behind Red Bull, leaving Aston Martin behind. As the championship battle remains a far cry for the Silverstone team, Alonso reckons his relationship with Lance Stroll has not been affected.

In the same interview with BBC Sport, Alonso highlighted his good relationship with Lance Stroll at present. He further explained that since they were not contending for the championship, there was open communication and less tension between the team and drivers. Their clear goals united them, and they collaborated to pursue those objectives.

“I don’t think there is much more mystery on this,” the Spaniard stated. “We have a good relationship now. We are not fighting for the championship. If we were fighting for the championship, maybe there would be less communication or a little bit more tension. Right now we have very clear goals and we work together in that direction,” he concluded.
