Oliver Bearman took over Carlos Sainz Jr.‘s seat during the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix after the Spaniard was hospitalized for an immediate appendices surgery after Friday’s FP2. Bearman had only the last free practice before qualifying to adjust himself with the car. The young Englishman brough his A game and secured P11 in qualifying.
What came as a surprise to everyone was the 18-year-old’s performance during the race. Oliver Bearman scored his maiden championship points as he secured P7 beating the likes of Lewis Hamilton and Lando Norris. Someone, who is driving in Formula One for the first time and bringing in such results, deserves a full-time seat and Ferrari Driver Academy head Jock Clear has now backed this demand.
So, he’s just a really intelligent driver and that’s what I’m really proud of because that is always been his strength and that’s going to get better and better. That’s going to pay off more and more as he gets to F1 and he starts to settle into what is an intelligent drivers’ sport.Jock Clear said via racefans.net.
According to Clear, Bearman is a very intelligent driver. There were a lot of places where he could have locked up and made a mistake during the Saudi Arabian GP, but he didn’t. Racing at such a tricky circuit, with that fast of a car for the first time at such short notice against all those experienced drivers is intimidating for anyone. But the way Bearman managed to keep his rhythm and got quicker towards the end of the race shows his brilliance and Ferrari is impressed by it.
Red Bull’s Liam Lawson claims Oliver Bearman’s error in judgment occurred during the GP
Ferrari offered Bearman special padding for the race as the car at the moment was made with Sainz’s comfort in mind. But Bearman requested the padding be removed. During the Sky Sports F1 podcast, Red Bull reserve driver Liam Lawson pointed out that this decision made the race more challenging for Bearman.
It’s really funny because, when I saw him say basically what he complained about it and they took it out, and I knew that he probably would quickly want it back. And I saw during the race his head going to one side because his neck was so sore.Liam Lawson said.
Lawson further suspected that Bearman may have underestimated the effects of constant g-forces due to his inexperience, which is why he requested to have the extra padding around his headrest removed. The headrest secures the neck and prevents head banging during strong g-forces.
In f1 the G-Force is way stronger than F2, perhaps that’s why Bearman didn’t suspect it which left him unprepared for the higher g-forces experienced during a race. Bearman was later seen telling the media that the race was physically challenging.
