FIA facing protests from SIX Formula 1 teams for limiting porpoising in favour of Mercedes

The FIA make up the authoritative body of Formula 1 which takes the decisions regarding the designing of cars, and other such technical nuances. While the FIA make the regulations, keeping the best interests of all the racing team in mind, many a times the teams are not satisfied with the way the FIA deals with certain issues and then they move forward to protest against such rules. A similar incident has occurred in the recent times as the FIA decided to announce a rule to reduce porpoising for the cars after repeated requests from a single team to do so.

Mercedes have been experiencing terrible porpoising with their cars ever since the beginning of the 2022 Formula 1 season. While the other teams which were facing similar problems could come up with a plausible solution to porpoising only a few races into this season, Mercedes never seemed to find an answer to their woes, and thus they tried to convince the FIA to intervene in this matter. And finally, the FIA did release a rule that would help Mercedes deal with porpoising, but the other teams which had worked hard to find an answer to porpoising by themselves, are not happy with the FIA’s decision to help Mercedes.

Six teams have reportedly decided to rally against the FIA for their decision on porpoising

FIA
The FIA–the governing authority of Formula 1

After Mercedes had moved the FIA to make a decision regarding porpoising which went in their favour, six teams, namely, Ferrari, Red Bull, AlphaTauri, Haas, Alfa Romeo, and Williams, have decided to challenge the FIA’s decision regarding the same. They have questioned the legitimacy of the FIA’s safety concerns as they believe the sport’s governing body is favouring Mercedes hugely with their ruling.

Speaking on the FIA’s allegedly flawed decision regarding the propoising, Red Bull Team Principal Christian Horner said, β€œWell, this is the problem, isn’t it? That regulations need to be black and white. I think we end up with encyclopaedias that sometimes are way too complicated, and there’s no such thing as the intent of the regulations. It’s a binary thing. I think the process is the thing to discuss as well because a TD [technical directive] shouldn’t be regulatory changes.”

Now, it only remains to be seen if the FIA, after being pressurized by the six teams, take back their technical directive and reverse their decision regarding porpoising or if they agree upon continuing with whatever regulations they had previously issued for the teams to follow
