Lance Stroll was at the center of controversy at the Qatar Grand Prix last weekend. Stroll, who is not enjoying one of the toughest seasons of his career, has a 136-point deficit in front of his double World Champion teammate Fernando Alonso. His consistently average performance can be one of the reasons for his outburst at his trainer in the Friday Qualifying at Qatar.

After arriving back in the team’s garage following his Q1 elimination, the Canadian threw his steering wheel out of the cockpit of his AMR22 in resentment. Stroll was then approached by his trainer, Henry Howe, and the Formula 1 television broadcast appeared to show Stroll pushing Howe as he reached the back of the garage. After the session, he spoke to reporters in the paddock area but only provided brief responses.

The FIA, the governing body of Formula 1, acted swiftly and decisively in response to Stroll’s actions. They reviewed the incident and decided to issue a written warning to the young driver, although the driver already made a formal apology to his team and trainer. However, the FIA did not clarify the alleged infraction for which Stroll was under investigation.

According to section 1.4 of the FIA Code of Ethics, “all forms of harassment against participants to the FIA activities, be it physical, mental, professional, or sexual, are prohibited.” This reminded the Aston Martin driver of his behavioral obligations and FIA’s zero-tolerance policy on ‘physical harassment’. Stroll has not yet responded publicly to the FIA’s warning or to his apologies.

Lance Stroll’s response to the incident involved pushing his trainer.

The Aston Martin’s chairman’s son took immediate measures to accept full responsibility for his conduct after realizing his error. He immediately apologized to his trainer and the entire team, admitting that his actions were wrong and did not align with the principles of the team nor the Formula 1’s.

The reasons for his inappropriate behavior in the garage can be pinned down to his frustrations for not performing like his teammate Alonso, who only faced one out-of-points race finish and no retirements in comparison to Stroll’s three retirements and six out-of-points finishes this season.

Fernando Alonso, with a tonne of experience and two World Championships to his name, is a formidable opposition. His exceptional skill and tactical judgment have consistently outshone Stroll on the track. Although Stroll has an unlimited contract with Aston Martin still, for him, the aim is clear: be better or be a minimum at par with his teammate.
