Aston Martin made a major resurgence in 2023, with the team rising to fifth place in the Constructors’ Championship from ninth in 2022. The Silverstone-based team managed to compete near the front this season, despite a dip in form towards the tail end of the year. Fernando Alonso led the team’s results with Lance Stroll trailing behind the two-time champion.
Former F1 driver Pedro De la Rorsa had a surprising name that he gave credit to for a lot of Aston Martin’s progress. De la Rosa gave acclaim to Lance Stroll for his work in the simulator and efforts in the winter. The Canadian driver was the only driver to remain with the squad going into the 2023 season, following Sebastian Vettel‘s retirement from the sport in 2022.
I think Lance played a very important role because he was the only driver who remained in the team after 2022. He worked a lot during the winter and was a very important link in the process was already clear in the simulator.Pedro De la Rosa said, as reported by soymotor.com
Lance Stroll also notably made a major recovery from a serious injury he incurred before the commencement of the 2023 season. Despite missing the pre-season testing, Stroll managed to recover in time to compete in the Bahrain Grand Prix, taking valuable points for the team in his first weekend back in F1.
Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso commended by Aston Martin team principal Mike Krack
Aston Martin enjoyed their most successful campaign out of their three years spent in the pinnacle of motorsport. With eight podium finishes and a fifth place in the standings, Aston Martin took significant steps forward from their previous years in the sport.
Team principal of Aston Martin Mike Krack hailed the teammates Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll for their teamwork and cooperation. Krack also appreciated the drivers restraining from making negative comments during difficult weekends for the team and the car.
They could have been really negative in the press – and we would have deserved it for failing to give them a competitive car that weekend – but neither did. Instead, both expressed their faith in the long-term goals and journey we're on.Mike Krack said, via Formula1.com
Both Alonso and Stroll are contracted to drive for Aston Martin again in 2024, confident of better results for the team. With predictions that the F1 field will converge in the coming years, Aston Martin will be hoping for more opportunities to move up the standings.
