“I don’t like Lewis Hamilton as a character,” French F1 racer René Arnoux makes some scathing comments on the seven-time World Champion

Lewis Hamilton has achieved legend status in Formula 1 because of everything that he has achieved in this sport. Over the years, the Briton has established his dominion over the other competitors with his seven record-setting World Championship titles and he seems all-set to try for even more in the upcoming seasons. But Lewis’ contributions have reached beyond Formula 1 and has made him an idol to many because of his philanthropy and advocacy. The racer has never shyed away from voicing his opinions, no matter how many obstacles come in his way, and that is what is so special about him.

In the coming week, Lewis Hamilton will be turning 38, but he shows no sign of slowing down. The Briton wants to keep continuing on the quest for his record-breaking eighth World title, and if Mercedes can get back to their winning ways next year, then Lewis Hamilton might get that easily enough. In the history of F1, only Nigel Mansell and Alain Prost have won a World Championship at 38, but that does not scare Hamilton.

Lewis Hamilton debuted in Formula 1 way back in 2007, and over the years, the sport has undergone several changes. There is the new fascination of the Race Directors on the drivers not wearing any jewellery at the races and then there is the new directive prohibiting all the drivers from making any political statement without prior approval by the FIA. But through all this, Lewis Hamilton has remained the same and he is still not going to be silenced by the rules when it comes to taking a stand against injustice. And it is his this characteristic that is not favored by all–such as the retired former F1 racer René Arnoux.

While Formula 1 always attempts to take a step forward when it comes to issues such as inclusivity, being an LGBTQIA+ ally, and others, not everyone in the sport share the same opinions. There are many former F1 racers who struggle to adapt to the changing times, and hence they do not like that the drivers of today are taking part in promoting such social matters. René Arnoux is someone who belongs to the group of people who detest Lewis Hamilton for his political statements.

He said, “I don’t like Hamilton as a character very much – said the 74-year-old Frenchman – I didn’t like that he asked Mercedes to make the car black. For me it was a disappointment. In Toto Wolff’s place I would have done it in half, half white and half black. It would have been a much more effective and positive message. Smarter. I’m tired of people fueling the black-white problem.

Arnoux’s string of outrageous statements did not end at him claiming to be “tired” of people bringing up the discrimination between the black and the white races. He even went ahead and criticized Lewis for hi fashion choices. He said, “I don’t like the way he dresses. Sometimes it seems completely out to me.” While René Arnoux’s comments on Lewis Hamilton might seem scathing to the many fans of the seven-time World Champion, fortunately, the Briton turns a blind eye to such remarks and always does what he determines to be the best action.

In the upcoming season, Lewis will be facing one of the biggest challenges of his F1 career, that is, to come back in full force after a horrible winless campaign in 2022. Now it only remains to be seen how he delivers in this new year.
