Max Verstappen is the David Copperfield of F1: Former racers give unanimous verdict on the Dutchman’s ‘magic’ at Monaco GP
Former racers Alexander Wurz and Pedro de la Rosa talked about Max Verstappen's astoundingly fast lap at the Monaco GP Quali.
Formula One is one of the most technically complex sports in the world, with hundreds of engineers, trained at the best schools of physics and mechanics all around the world, working tirelessly to make sure their teams win. Thus, it goes without saying that magic has very little to do with F1–it is all about the brilliant and true grit of the racers, the determination and scientific knowledge of the engineers and car designers, and the management capabilities of the team executives. But Max Verstappen‘s Monaco GP outing last week proved that this statement is not true–miracles do exist in this sport.
During the Qualifying on Saturday ahead of the Monaco GP, it was Fernando Alonso who came as a shocker with his impressive speed. The AMR23 has already been observed to give some good performances, but Nando’s Quali pace in Monaco topped that of all other rivals as he went for the pole position during his flying lap in Q3. For a few moments, fans did believe the Asturian would be taking away the pole in the Principality afterall, but then Max put down an astonishing lap timing to fix his first place start at the Main Race on Sunday.
During a chit-chat on the F1 Nation podcast, former F1 drivers Alexander Wurz and Pedro de la Rosa both concluded that Max Verstappen is somewhat of a magician when it comes to F1. Wurz claimed the Dutchman’s Monaco Quali lap as “one of the strongest Max Verstappen shows” and he also said, “[Monaco GP] Qualifying was a show down to the last sector where [Max Verstappen] had to beat David Copperfield in the last sector to go for the pole position.” Thus, Alex Wurz equated Max to the great magician David Copperfield because his Q3 lap at the Monaco Quali was nothing short of true magic.
Pedro de la Rosa has said Max Verstappen excelled in his tire choice to win pole at the Monaco GP Quali
Once Alexander Wurz made his remark on Max Verstappen’s almost-magic-like pole position win at the Monaco GP Qualifying, Pedro de la Rosa claimed that it all boiled down to the tire choice. While Fernando Alonso seemed to have the upper hand, he had pitted early to make a tire change, and Max had fresher tires in the end. He said, “[Max’s] tires were at their best during the last sector as well, and Fernando’s tyres were dropping off by then. So anyway, I don’t want to take anything away from Max because as Alex said, he was David Copperfield in that last sector, for sure.”
In other news, Max Verstappen’s outing in Monaco has almost sealed his World Championship hat-trick for good. His closest competitor till the Miami GP had been his own teammate Sergio Perez. But in Monaco, a massive error from the Mexican caused him to start from the back of the race due to his Qualifying crash. Now, the point-gap between Max and Sergio has become a whopping 39 points while previously, it was only 7 points before the Miami GP.
