After the Italian GP, Ferrari team principal Frederic Vasseur commended Max Verstappen for his remarkable achievement of securing a record-breaking 10th consecutive Grand Prix victory. Vasseur highlighted that Verstappen’s consistent success can be attributed to his ability to make minimal mistakes in the past two seasons.
During the Monza GP, the Tifosi were thrilled to have experienced such an intense battle for pole position in the first 15 laps between Verstappen and Carlos Sainz, who started on pole. Vasseur admitted that Ferrari had hoped to pressure Verstappen into making a mistake last week. Sainz led the race for the first 14 laps before Verstappen overtook him. Sainz remained Verstappen’s closest competitor until Red Bull’s Sergio Perez passed him with just six laps to go.
Vasseur praised Max Verstappen’s exceptional performance in Formula 1 races over the last two years, highlighting that Verstappen’s impressive feat is not limited to just the last ten races but has extended for over two years. Vasseur commended Verstappen’s ability to avoid making mistakes during races, even in challenging situations like Monza.
“But the most impressive for me is that Max, it’s not just about the last ten races, it’s about the last two years. I would say that he didn’t do a single mistake in the races…it’s easier not to do mistakes…[at Monza], …he’s able to manage the situation very well, he put some pressure on Carlos but never too much and then didn’t take risks,” he said as reported by Racefans.net.

Fred Vasseur defended Sainz vs. Leclerc battle in the Italian GP

During the Monza GP, Ferrari drivers Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc engaged in an intense battle for third position at their home track. Ultimately, Sainz emerged victorious, securing pole position on Saturday. Both Ferrari drivers safely crossed the finish line, entertaining the crowd and showcasing their strong performance. Ferrari mostly focuses on what’s best for the team, but this time, they let their drivers compete against each other.
In previous races, Sainz was usually instructed to stay behind Leclerc to help the team’s overall performance. But at Monza, the team changed their strategy. Vasseur explained that this decision was a gesture of gratitude to the fans for their support. “It was the best way to thank the fans for their support, it was not fair to set an order with four laps to go.” said Vasseur.
Vasseur expressed that he was proud of how the drivers conducted themselves. Vasseur mentioned that he opted to grant them more freedom instead of constraining them during the race. “It was my decision,… I felt more comfortable leaving them free than constraining them. It’s not like I didn’t shake in those moments too.”
