Pierre Gasly finished 11th in the Mexican Grand Prix after an unlucky red flag came out right after he made his pit stop. Gasly was running ninth and moved up to eighth after Nico Hulkenberg pitted, but right after his stop, Kevin Magnussen crashed heavily into the barriers, bringing out the red flag.

Yuki Tsunoda, Alexander Albon, and Gasly’s teammate Esteban Ocon gained over 10 seconds by stopping during the red flag. Gasly said that wasn’t the only issue he encountered during the Grand Prix. He said that he suffered a huge loss of speed while upshifting from fourth to fifth gear, costing him positions.

It’s just a bit frustrating when you put in a lot of work and red flag comes. I mean, I’ve benefited from it in the past. Today was just not our day.

Gasly could finish P11 right behind Ocon, barely missing out on points. Gasly conceded that issues were present that needed to be addressed off-track. He mentioned that bigger changes than a better strategy were required to improve Alpine’s results. Gasly currently stands 10th in the standings, just ahead of Lance Stroll

Daniel Ricciardo qualified 4th for the Mexican Grand Prix, shocking many. Pierre Gasly could only manage 11th while his teammate Ocon was out in Q1, starting 15th for the race. Gasly drove for Alpha Tauri for five years and had some ideas about their sudden surge in performance.

Gasly said that the Alpha Tauri suffered on the straights, losing time, but the track in Mexico is suited to them. The AT04 is quick in fast corners, and because Mexico is filled with them, Alpha Tauri saw great results over the weekend. 

I have my ideas on why we’re not competitive and why AlphaTauri is competitive, for example. There are a couple of obvious things and stuff that I’ve already told the guys, which cost us in Sector 1.

Alpha Tauri chief race engineer Jonathan Eddolls added that the car has great mechanical reliability on track. Eddolls further said that the Honda engine is very powerful in Mexico, and the Alpha Tauris benefited from that.
