Andretti Autosport is preparing to join the pinnacle of motorsport in 2025 at the earliest. With the FIA deal already approved, Andretti now only needs F1 approval for commercial and sponsorship purposes. The American team is partnering with General Motors’ Cadillac to enter the grid, with a deal already in place.
General Motors has been encouraged to join by the likes of Christian Horner, who said the American company would be beneficial to the sport. GM had already said they would only join Formula One with Andretti, and no one else. Now, General Motors has made the huge announcement of registering to manufacture power units for Andretti from 2028. GM President Mark Reuss said the team was very confident about the announcement.
We are thrilled that our new Andretti Cadillac F1 entry will be powered by a GM power unit. With our deep engineering and racing expertise, we're confident we'll develop a successful power unit for the series, and position Andretti Cadillac as a true works team.Mark Reuss said, as reported by motorsport.com
Andretti will look for another engine supplier until 2028, with the most likely being the Renault engine, currently used only by Alpine. GM will join Andretti at the Las Vegas GP to lobby the Formula One Group for complete approval, aiming to get their entry bid complete before preparing further for an F1 entry.
GM will make Andretti the only “All-American” team in F1
Andretti isn’t the only American constructor associated with Formula One. The Gunther Steiner-headed Haas F1 team is also American, founded by Gene Haas, and based in California.

However, Haas has roots outside of America, with a Ferrari engine and multiple bases outside their home country. Contrastingly, Michael Andretti claimed Andretti would be the first team to be completely American, including the car manufacturing and one of the drivers in the two seats. Now, after GM’s announcement, Andretti plans to be completely American including the Cadillac power unit from 2028 onwards.
They [Haas] had no infrastructure, they can't build their own car. We have to build our own car, and it's a huge undertaking.Michael Andretti said, as reported by thesportsrush.com
Michael Andretti also plans to place an American driver in the seat for Andretti-Cadillac. Currently, Logan Sargeant is placed with Williams but could be excluded from the grid within the next few years due to his lack of performance. However, more likely to be signed with Andretti is 23-year-old Colton Herta, a successful Indycar driver.
