“He wants more money,” George Russell blatantly accuses Max Verstappen for using potential retirement as a negotiation tactic
Mercedes F1 driver George Russell has gone on to accuse Max Verstappen of using his potential retirement for salary negotiation.
Max Verstappen and George Russell
Max Verstappen and George Russell are some of the most talented drivers present on the 2023 Formula 1 grid. Both have had exceptional performances in past racing series before joining F1. Whilst Max joined in 2015, George got the chance way further down the line in 2019. Nevertheless, both the drivers seemed to have found themselves competing with each other at times.
While they battle it out on track sometimes, the off track drama always keeps entertaining the fans. After beating Lewis Hamilton to become world champion in 2021, Max went on to repeat the feat last year. By the looks of it, Max Verstappen has a comfortable lead in the drivers standings and seems to be well on his way to win a third world championship.
His contract with the team lasts till 2028. However, the Dutchman hasn’t planned on renewing . Max Verstappen has previously explained to the media as to how he wants to explore racing outside the pinnacle of motorsport. At the conclusion of his current deal with Red Bull, Max will just be 31 years of age. Fellow rival George Russell however has come up to the conclusion that all his talks about retirement are merely a ruse in order to help with his salary negotiation.
George Russell doesn’t believe Max Verstappen’s plans of retiring at the end of 2028
In an interview, here is what he had to say. “I think he’s whinging because he wants more money!” he said. “He’s the highest-paid on this grid, and rightly so for what he’s achieving, but I think it’s all a big tactic, his threat of retirement and whatnot. I hope he doesn’t, I hope he stays for as long as I stay because I want to fight against the best drivers in the world, fighting head-on-head with Lewis [Hamilton] at the moment, I want the chance to do that with Max and with Charles [Leclerc] and with Lando [Norris],” he concluded.
It seems pretty clear that George Russell is not at all convinced by Max Verstappen’s plans of possibly retiring. Drivers like him, Lando, Max and Charles have been tipped to take the baton from the greats of the past. It will be interesting to see what happens in Silverstone as the British GP takes place this weekend. Everything is to play for as 7 out of the 10 teams are based here. There will surely be a lot of surprises.
