George Russell is supporting the decision taken by the FIA to penalize Fernando Alonso at the Australian GP. The latter was given a 20-second penalty for his last-lap dangerous maneuver, despite him thinking otherwise. Alonso was disappointed to receive the penalty as he believed any racing driver would do what he did.

Fernando Alonso attempted to increase his speed on the final lap but going into turn six, he surprisingly braked. Russell who was right behind him with DRS and because of this, he became entangled in his dirty air, which ultimately caused him to crash.

The Brit left the race without suffering any injuries, but he was left a bit surprised with how things went down during his last lap tussle with Alonso.

I was actually looking at the steering wheel and when I looked up, I was in Fernando's gearbox, and the next thing I know I'm in the wall. I think if I hadn't been penalized I would have opened Pandora's box for the rest of the season and in lower categories.

George Russell made it clear that he doesn’t hold anything against the Spaniard. He believes whatever happens on the track has nothing to do with off-track. Moreover, is of the opinion that the Alonso penalty was important due to the greater consequences going ahead.

George Russell is hoping for a better weekend in Suzuka

After the double DNF in Australia Mercedes finds itself in a very tough spot. The car has severe bouncing problems in addition to other issues. The drivers are feeling dissatisfied with the team as well as because of their own costly errors on the track.

There is currently insufficient downforce in some speed-sensitive areas. Despite all the chaos at Mercedes, George Russell feels it’s too early to draw any conclusions.

It's still early in the season. We know the strengths and weaknesses of our car. We do well in high-speed corners, but we suffer more in the low ones, which are the corners in Jeddah, Bahrain and Suzuka. There is a lot to understand and we are not where we want. But we are trying to improve the correlation between what we have seen in the simulator and that lack of performance.

The British driver has been at the team’s base in Brackley trying to understand the issues regarding the W15. However, he is also paying attention to his performance and where he can improve. Mercedes has a long way to go in this season, hopefully, they will be able to resolve their issues soon and make a roaring comeback.
