George Russell, Lewis Hamilton
George Russell joined the Silver Arrows in 2022. Critics expected the 25-year-old to struggle against 7-time world champion Lewis Hamilton as his teammate. However, Russell managed to beat expectations during their first year at the Silver Arrows. As Hamilton could not match the younger Briton on the German team. So much so, that George is not worried about his future teammates.
Recently, George Russell was asked about who the 25-year-old would prefer as his teammate once Hamilton decides to retire. The Briton gave a rather humorous reply, as he stated his indifference. He said, “To be honest, I really don’t care.” Russell took a dig at his teammate as he further stated how being on the same team as Lewis can prepare a driver for anyone in the future.
George Russell explained, “if you’ve been teammates with Lewis then there’s no one that would be a faster more challenging teammate than him so.. anyone.” The 25-year-old is glad to have had a 7-time world champion as his teammate at Mercedes. Moreover, the Briton was proud of having outperformed the F1 legend during their time together at Brackley so far.

Russell joined Mercedes when the team struggled with the new F1 regulations in 2022. The 25-year-old came to the Silver Arrows after spending three seasons with below-par machinery at Williams. This allowed George Russell to adapt to the woes of the Mercedes W13 better than Lewis Hamilton. As the 38-year-old had only driven race-winning challengers for the better part of a decade.
Additionally, George Russell clinched the only Mercedes win in 2022 at the Brazilian GP. The Interlagos track is loved by Lewis Hamilton, who sees local hero Ayrton Senna as his inspiration. Even in 2023, Russell managed to hit the ground running earlier than Hamilton as the Mercedes struggles continued. Lewis managed to get the first podium for the team in Australia. Although, George could’ve had a shot for the race win if not for a mechanical issue that saw him retire from the race.
Thus, George Russell is confident he can match anyone as a teammate in F1. The 25-year-old has spent over a season with an F1 legend on the same team. Yet, Russell has consistently outperformed Lewis Hamilton. Subsequently, as Mercedes slowly shifted its focus to its younger driver, George would further strive to deliver stronger results.
