Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen are the two biggest names in Formula 1 right now. Both drivers are world champions who have showcased their brilliance in the sport over the years. As such, fans have continued to debate about which driver is better than the other. Now, Hamilton’s teammate George Russell has picked the camp of the seven-time world champion.

Russell mentioned that he gets to learn from the 38-year-old, having been teammates at Mercedes since 2022. Interestingly, George Russell had managed to outperform Hamilton last season and took the team’s sole victory at Interlagos that year. He told Autoweek, “I learn a lot on and off the track from him, and he’s a huge figure for the sport.”

The 25-year-old made it clear that when it comes to the 2023 grid, he believes that Lewis Hamilton is the fastest driver, ahead of championship leader Max Verstappen. Russell was glad to be able to go up against the seven-time world champion every race as his teammate. The Mercedes driver said, “And then you would define him as the quickest and the best on the grid. And I get the chance to go head-to-head with him, still now, week in, week out. “

While Russell mentioned that he puts Hamilton ahead of Verstappen in terms of pace and talent. The 25-year-old was convinced that the seven-time champion was the best driver the sport had ever seen. George Russell believed that Lewis Hamilton remains hungry to win a record-breaking eighth F1 championship. However, the former Williams driver aims to defeat the F1 icon head-to-head.

George Russell explained, “I think he’s hungry to try and win more races. I’m hungry to achieve that and beat him. Lewis still is the greatest driver of all time.” The 25-year-old will spend at least two more seasons with Hamilton at the Silver Arrows. Both Mercedes drivers signed contract extensions with the Brackley-based team till 2025.

Thus, George Russell reckons that Lewis Hamilton is the fastest driver on the 2023 F1 grid. The 25-year-old made it clear that the seven-time champion is faster than reigning world champion Max Verstappen. Although, Russell insisted that despite considering Hamilton as the quickest in the sport, he is still going to try and defeat his teammate.
