Guenther Steiner pauses Mick Schumacher’s contract extension talks as Aston Martin closes door
Mick Schumacher
With Aston Martin going for a two-time World Champion after the proposed exit of four-time F1 title-holder Sebastian Vettel at the end of 2023 by signing a deal with Fernando Alonso, Haas has suddenly found that the ball is in their court regarding the recruitment of Mick Schumacher for the next season. The American team was hurrying to form a deal to retain the German racer for next year as they had known Aston Martin might lure in Schumacher, especially when the 2020 F2 Champion had Vettel’s special recommendation to back him up. But since Aston Martin went for Alonso, the options are now limited for Schumacher and hence, Haas is going to pause contract talks for now.
Twelve Grands Prix have already taken place in the current Formula 1 2022 season, and the paddocks are now empty as the month-long summer break has set in for this year. But there had been previous reports that claimed Mick Schumacher might get news on his potential contract extension with Haas before the summer break as Haas would attempt to lock in a deal with the young racer before Aston Martin tried to recruit him to their team. Now that Aston Martin has chosen Alonso for a deal, Haas has got enough time to mull over their driver options before bringing a deal to Mick’s table.
Haas delays contract extension talks with Mick Schumacher as Aston Martin chooses Fernando Alonso
Fernando Alonso’s move from Alpine to Aston Martin is going to be a crucial event in the driver’s market as it has set off a chain reaction which will affect many other racers’ future in F1. With Aston Martin going for Alonso, Oscar Piastri is still free for a seat, and McLaren are considering locking a deal with him. If that happens, then Daniel Ricciardo will be left with no potential seat for 2023 at the moment.
Similarly, Aston Martin choosing Fernando Alonso is going to affect Schumacher’s future as he will have to perform to his best abilities for his career now as his only option to stay in F1 seems to be getting recruited by Haas for another season. Speaking of his decision to stall contract talks with Schumacher for now, Haas Team Principal Guenther Steiner said, “Talks are going on every day, it will probably only go into more detail after or during the summer break.”
According to German boradcaster RTL, “Schumacher will not get a new contract with his Haas team during the summer break as team boss Guenther Steiner is no longer in a hurry to negotiate an extended contract with the driver”.
