Guenther Steiner and Lewis Hamilton

Guenther Steiner, the Haas F1 Team Principal, has candidly talked about the former 7-time F1 World Champion, Lewis Hamilton. He has made it known that he is willing to bring him to Haas on one condition: If Mercedes’ team boss, Toto Wolff is willing to pay Hamilton’s hefty salary – which is just too much to bear for the American outfit.

Guenther Steiner is well-known in the F1 paddock for his witty answers and while answering whether he would be willing to sign Lewis Hamilton at Haas, he said to Metro Sport: “If Toto pays his salary, yes absolutely! You have to write that now! When Toto asks why he should pay the salary, I’ll say, Because you should! I think he’ll stay. He’s a Mercedes man.”

“Which other options has he got? All the other teams have got very strong drivers. Max [Verstappen] is at Red Bull, Fernando [Alonso] is at Aston Martin and Charles Leclerc is at Ferrari.” Steiner has shed light on a very important point – All the other top teams have already got their number-one driver issue sorted on their respective teams.

While no one has openly admitted to being the number two driver on a certain team, the ardent followers of the sport are well aware of who the ‘number one’ drivers are on teams like Red Bull, Ferrari, and, Aston Martin. Thus, Steiner has jokingly admitted that he would be willing to bring on board Lewis Hamilton if Wolff would be ready to pay his salary.

Guenther Steiner has been leading the charge of Haas F1 since its debut at the pinnacle of motor racing in 2016. He was recently asked whether he would leave the Kannapolis-based team if an offer from Mercedes or Red Bull came his way. But the Italian-born isn’t interested. While responding to the query, he said: “I’ve got a job to finish here at Haas.”

He added: “With Haas, I started it, and when you start something you become even more attached than when you’re put into administrate something that exists. I started it and I put a lot of effort in to get Gene Haas to come into Formula 1. I feel quite loyal to Gene and I feel loyal to the people at Haas because I haven’t finished the job. I need to bring the team at least one or two steps forward.”

So, Steiner is not going anywhere even if the top dogs of F1 came knocking on his door, he has indicated that he is fully committed to Haas and does not see himself parting ways with the team anytime soon. After enduring two rough seasons in 2020 and 2021, Haas have improved considerably since the start of the 2022 season. They even aim to compete for podiums in a few years – clearly not the case right now. But, it’ll be interesting to see if they can or not.
