Gunther Steiner is a popular figure in the F1 paddock. The 58-year-old has led the Haas F1 team since the team’s debut in 2016. Gunther became a fan favorite for his appearances in the Netflix docuseries, ‘Drive to Survive’. The Italian knows the paddock through and through. Steiner had recently opened up about who he thinks is the best F1 team boss he has seen in action.

When choosing the best F1 Team Principal he has seen since his F1 debut, Steiner picked Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff. He said, “I would say [Mercedes’s] Toto Wolff”. The 58-year-old described that Wolff looked at the sport carefully for years before spearheading the Silver Arrows. Previously, Toto even held a stake in the Williams F1 team.

The Austrian billionaire oversaw historic success at Brackley, with Mercedes winning seven consecutive teams’ titles. However, these record-breaking results are not the only reason for Gunther’s choice. The Haas team boss even credited Wolff for his managerial skills in the business of F1. Gunther Steiner stated, “Not only the seven championships but also the good organization and the way he behaves in business.”

The Haas boss was asked if Christian Horner and Toto Wolff thanked him for taking away some attention through his role in Drive to Survive. Gunther gave a lighthearted reply and clarified that in F1, team bosses rarely express such gratitude. He said, “They will never thank you for anything… No thanks is already a compliment. At least you don’t get a complaint.”

F1 team bosses are known to have rather upfront conversations. Gunther and his fellow Team Principals leave no stone unturned to gain an advantage over their rivals or to lodge complaints over one another. Drive to Survive’s latest season even showcased a massive argument between Toto Wolff and Christian Horner over porpoising on the 2022 cars.

Gunther Steiner reckons Toto Wolff is the best F1 team boss of his time. Wolff has played a pivotal role in ensuring unprecedented success at Brackley and remains a major stakeholder in the team. Steiner believes that Toto is good at not only managing an F1 team but also running its commercial interests smoothly in the modern era.
